The 2002 Olympic Winter Games Commemorative Two Coin Proof Set in Presentation Case includes the silver and gold proof coins. These coins have a brilliant mirror-like finish. The term "proof" refers to a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with specially polished dies. Each coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field. The coins are then placed in protective plastic capsules and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case, accompanied by an official Certificate of Authenticity.
The silver dollar was designed by U.S. Mint Sculptors/Engravers. The obverse is a creation by John Mercanti which features the Crystal Emblem of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Olympic Rings, and the Games' secondary identity mark entitled: "Rhythm of the Land." Donna Weaver designed the reverse of the silver dollar depicting the Salt Lake City skyline with the Rocky Mountains in the background.
Donna Weaver designed both the obverse and the reverse for the gold five-dollar coin. The obverse features the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games Crystal Emblem superimposed on top of the Games' secondary identity mark entitled: "Rhythm of the Land." The reverse features the Olympic flame in relief atop a cauldron.
Metal composition of the silver coin is 90% silver and 10% alloy; diameter is 1.500 (± 0.003) inches or 38.10 (± 0.08) mm and the weight is 26.730 (± 0.400) grams. The gold coin is 90% gold and 10% alloy; diameter is 0.850 (± 0.003) inches or 21.59 (± 0.08) mm and the weight is 8.359 (± 0.042) grams. These coins are U.S. legal tender and are backed by the U.S. Government for weight and content.
